Allan with his award at the Stormwater NZ Conference awards ceremony

Leading stormwater expert Allan Leahy was honoured as the Stormwater Professional of the Year at the recent 2017 Stormwater NZ Conference.

Allan is a principal technical specialist at MWH, now part of Stantec, with over 30 years experience in the industry. He was selected by the judges this year based on his technical prowess and also his history of giving back to the industry. His highly regarded stormwater training workshops run by the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand regularly receive high praise from participants.

In awarding Allan with this award, the judges pointed to his vast track record of going above and beyond to advance the critical area of stormwater engineering. This includes the contribution he has made through his training sessions, mentoring of graduates and his involvement on various special interest committees.

This award continues Allan’s remarkable run of industry accolades in recent years where he has been awarded by many of the major industry bodies in New Zealand including the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand, the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand and now Water New Zealand.

“I am truly humbled and stunned by this recognition,” says Mr Leahy, “It genuinely came as a shock to hear my name called out as the recipient of the award, there are many worthy candidates and for me to receive it in that company is truly special”.

Allan has led stormwater projects across the country with clients like Auckland Council, Christchurch City Council, Fonterra, Auckland Transport, New Zealand Transport Agency, and many more.

Congratulations to Allan on just the latest achievement and recognition of his talent to date.

The citation for his award from the judges is as follows:

For this second year of a new award, the judges once more had a difficult time deciding on the winner. The criteria set a very high standard of professionalism, and we believe this can only be good for the overall performance of the industry.

This year we have focused on the second criterion, “Contribution to the industry and wider community/industry partners“.

This criterion recognises that stormwater is at the nexus of many development pressures. Our sector is uniquely positioned to offer opportunities for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work in areas of extreme public interest – the amenity of our urban environments and the quality of their fresh and coastal waters, as well as public security from flooding and sea level rise.

In light of this analysis, we have awarded the “Stormwater Professional of the Year – 2017 Award” to Allan Leahy of MWH. Allan is well-recognised for his contribution to the industry over many years, but here we particularly recognise his ability to encapsulate in his training workshops (carried out through IPENZ) the many sometimes conflicting outcomes which good urban stormwater management must deliver. This is crucial to developing soundly-based professional capability in the industry.  Good training is very hard to do, and Allan’s trainees give him high praise.

We congratulate Allan in earning the 2017 Stormwater Professional of the Year Award.
